The Hamlets at Duncan, a brand-new, assisted-living, and complex-care senior community located in Duncan on Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, was designed and built with the local history and community in mind. Architects and designers took advantage of the beautiful location by the Georgia Strait to echo inside the building the community history found on the outside.
The building is very close to the Somenos Marsh. The Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society is an old charitable group who care deeply about the S’amunu/Somenos Conversation Area, which is an important area for bird and biodiversity within the Pacific Migratory Flyway. Because of the nearby Somenos Marsh, buildings at the Hamlets were designed to bring the outside in.
Different buildings and Hamlets were named by individuals from the local Cowichan First Nations. There are good views of the beautiful greenery outside and several secure outdoor areas where residents can enjoy nature and the local flora and fauna.
In addition, the Hamlets at Duncan has made sustainable practices a way of life. The community aims to add to the community and not take anything away from the splendour of the area. This particular senior community was built to reflect the community that is also serves with buildings divided into “neighbourhoods” to create a warm and inviting culture.
